Cafe neutrino meeting minutes (09/02/10)
Present: N. Abgrall, E. Benedetto, F. Dufour, I. Efthymiopoulos, S. Gilardoni, C. Hansen, G. Prior, T. Stora. T. Weber
Agenda:
General:
New colleagues are Torsten Weber a student from Aachen U. who will be around August-October 2010 and is working on the production ring for the BB with Elena B; and Ole Hansen who is a CERN doctoral student (NEU2012) who will be working on the NF target/front-end systems with Ilias.
NUFACT registration and early bird fee have been extended to September 2010, 20th. If you want to submit an abstract and register, do it asap as the visa processing may take 1-2 weeks.
Gersende is looking for a new cafe-neutrino meeting chair from September 2010. Christian will take over, helped by Fanny for the minutes. Thanks to both for volunteering.
Round-table:
From Thierry, Peter is back to Slovakia. He left before the 18N production target work could be finished. Hope he can work on it remotely. No one else to continue the work for the time being. Proposal to use ISOLDE for a storage ring study maybe a production ring also. Would be low γ, low intensity tiny scale accumulation and decay ring. Will store radioactive ions beam of the order of 108 particles per second, 3-10 MeV/nucleon. A workshop in view of submit a Letter of Intent will be held in November. Trying to look into possibilities to have also a detector. C. Volpe did quite some work on low-energy BB. Can we put a target in the ring to make it a production ring (could serve as demonstrator) ? Can we use LEIR directly and in this case is there enough space ? Can we have 8Li ? For the proposal can also do stable ions. Advantage is that this would be a so-called offline production, meaning that we don't need to receive protons from CERN and this can be operated during shutdown period where competition for beam is not as hard as in the case of the online mode. ISOLDE wants to add some neutrino physics in its program so this is well compatible.
From Christian, Daniel who was a summer student produced a merging scheme for the decay ring. His simulation seems to work well. His report is finished and will be presented in NUFACT. Christian is working on collective effects in the decay ring, it is above the limit. Working closely with experts on that. The decay ring is nice because it has not been built yet, later will have to do the study for the PS and SPS. For the decay ring the parameters from FP6 were chosen but will need a redesign of the decay ring. Need a lower impedance in the decay ring. For the SPS whast is the design intensity of the machine after upgrade ? Out of the source Christian is using now 4x1012 ions stored in the decay ring for He. Ne is different. That is about the same number per second. Comments/question from the advisory panel is that can the intensity required for the BB meet the designed intensity of the machines ? Looking like for the upgrade the impedance will be difficult to be reduced (thinking about adding more collimators) and working on the electron cloud problems. But to meet the intensity required at the LHC will have to work on the impedance. Will ask to E. Chapochnikova what is the expected impedance in the SPS.
From Elena, Torsten is using Geant4 for the production at target then the tracking code written by Jakob and the lattice from Michaela for the tracking. Want to look into circulating deuterium and have a lithium target. Need to look into if it can be solid or should be a liquid fill. The idea is to compare the results with 6TRACK code.
From Fanny, has been quite busy with T2K work so far. Will start to look at the MIND detector simulation together with Anselmo. T2K Collaboration meeting was two weeks ago. They can see events in the forward detector. The Near Detector is working well. Still need a lot of work on the software part but working on it right now.
From Nicolas, working on NA61 analysis (pion/kaons for T2K). Analysis of the C thin target was done. Replica target is being analysed right now. Already using it to tune the interaction for the flux simulation, not exactly the same target geometry. Plan to publish data in December.
From Ilias, went to the Japan neutrino summer school as part of the NBI (Neutrino Beam Instrumentation) workshop. Visited JPARC, the accelerator facility, target area and T2K near detector. Could see the robot for the target manipulation. Was also an open day lab so a lot of people showed up. T2K is in shutdown until November this year. From FNAL people who were present, the request of running the Tevatron for 3 more years if accepted will delay the upgrade to the NUMI beam and the neutrino program. NUFACT2011 will be at CERN and the neutrino summer school in Gran-Sasso. 27-28 of September in the continuation of the Mars 2010 workshop on possibility of a PS neutrino experiment, we will have another workshop at CERN. Will look into CNGS upgrade possibilities (after 2015-2016). Part of NEU2012 WP. About the neutrino experiment using the PS beam, horn and beam should be ok but money to provide the infrastructure is limited and the tunner/ventilation are old. First estimate considered as low was 25 MCHF. Not part of the MTP, so will be discussed in more details during the workshop in view to submit a detailed proposal with the cost for the infrastructure.
From Gersende, Saurabh was around April-August 2010 and did a simulation in Geant4 of the ionization loss using LiH made of 6Li and 7Li isotope. There is some difference seen. Gersende is taking over the simulation looking at the modelling and assumption made in Geant4. We have delivered our first EUROnu milestone which was the baseline revision (under review by Gianluigi Arduini now) and will be posted/submitted as EUROnu document soon. Proposal to make an R&D experiment still miss description of the instrumentation and cost and work on the radio-protection side. If building the first stage RF amplifier will need a ~200 kCHF and if removing the cavity from the MTA, cost of breaking the shielding amount to ~100kCHF. Resources on the RF side are very limited but will complete the proposal and submit it to CERN management possibly as soon as finished (aim is September).
