Cafe neutrino meeting minutes (10/02/2011)
Present: C. Hansen, O. M. Hansen, N. Charitonidis, G. Prior, E. Wildner, S. Gilardoni, E. Benedetto, I. Efthymiopoulos
Agenda:
- News and Discussions (round table)
Round-table:
From G. Prior,
The final draft of the Neutrino Factory IDR was given in the EUROnu meeting at RAL.
Comments will have to be sent before 20th of February.
Trying to read through all IDR and and send comments.
Specially, Target, Magnet and all Front End.
In contact Bob Weggel (BNL) for the new design of the magnet.
N. Souchlas managed to make MARS and FLUKA simulation agree by adding MCNP (from Los Alamos) into MARS.
Trying to figure out, with Harold Kirk, where O.M. Hansen can contribute.
From a year from now a magnet design has to be finished.
From I. Efthymiopoulos,
Thinks a study of the Magnet should be done by O.M. Hansen (using G4Beamline) without
waiting for the latest magnet design from BNL. BNL's expectation on CERN is that Hansen
should show that the chosen design is the optimal.
The Laguna-LBNO (long baseline neutrino oscillation) meeting marsh 3-5 building 30 (auditorium).

NUFACT2011 1-6th of August.
From O. M. Hansen,
Ole has already two different designs that he runs with the G4Beamline.
One written by Pavel which is the current baseline.
And another one the he has written himself. Can show current status next
cafe neutrino meeting (24/2).
From N. Charitonidis
Preparing an experiment with Tungsten powder in 2012. Working with simulations to decide
how many bunches to be send on it. Want to study the thermal deposition on the target.
From C. Hansen,
Have studied Collective Effects (still only Transversal Broad Band Impedance) for a Decay Ring
with gamma = 350 (from old gamma = 100). Using Antoine's new lattice (gamma_transition = 18.7).
Required number ions per bunch increase then by factor 3.5. The bunch intensity limit decreased
with higher gamma, but not as much as needed. But then Enrique showed that the Supression Factor
can be relaxed with higher gammma. After relaxing SF from 0.58% to 1% the bunch intensity limit
was increased so that more less Beta Beam scenarios rejected by the Transversal Broad Band Impedance.
Also checked if assuming faster SPS (0.45 T/s --> 1 T/s) ramp would help, but it did not decrease
the wanted number of ions per bunch so much.
Started to look into how merging work with gamma = 350. This will be done with BBPhase but before
that new RF programs have to be produced by Antoine's (edited by Daniel Heinrich) mathematica program.
Tried to change the values (e.g. gamma --> 350) but it crashes. In discussion with Antoine...
Working on making an automatic java homepage for the new FP7 database.
Doodle for meeting in Lauvain la Neuve should be filled.
From E. Benedetto,
Contacted people in Argonne for the lithium liquid target (to be used for direct kinematic production ring).
These people has a liquid lithium target with same thicknes but they are also only in R&D.
Also optimizing the lattice in the Production Ring.
Also discussion what Gianmaria from university of Padova should work on.
He will come to CERN the week of 21/2.
Discussed with Vassilis about the coupling between SixTrack and Fluka.
Should be available now (for our case) so Elena will start to use this for the Production Ring.
Looking on how Beta Beams can profit from the LHC injectors upgrade.
Specifically studying radiation issues in PS.
From E. Wildner,
Planning a Beta Beam meeting where Thierry Stora will present the new ring.
Doing implementations for costing at CERN.
From S. Gilardoni,
A study is ongoing of building an RCS as upgrade of LHC injectors.
However this RCS would not be useful for Beta Beams.

A new email list should be created, "Neutrinos at CERN", where more unofficial emails
could be send, for example invitations to Laguna meetings.
Next meeting:
24th February 10am - next cafe-neutrino meeting (room tbc).
Agenda:
Presentation by O.M. Hansen
