Cafe neutrino meeting minutes (24/03/2011)
Present: C. Hansen, O. M. Hansen, E. Benedetto, G. Prior, E. Wildner, S. Parker, N. Charitonidis
Agenda:
- News and Discussions (round table)
Round-table:
From S. Parker,
News from Fermilab:
A fire in the MINOS mine causes MINOS to be down for the moment.
R&D for LBNE is working hard. But will probably only be built if we soon see a (big) θ13
since it does not have a much bigger reach than current experiments.
S. Parker gives a seminar about the θ23 measurements difference for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos in MINOS.
Top floor in building 4, tomorrow morning.
People are working on Project X to build a very intense proton source. Want to build
a muon collider of which neutrino factory could be a start.
From N. Charitonidis,
Have built up a facility to test materials with a beam from SPS.
Will test tungsten powder if it can withstand the beam.
Powder cannot be modelled easy in code to this experiment will provide with important input data.
Will probably start in June.
From C. Hansen,
Developing first understandings of instability dampings with octupoles that could help
the intensities of the Beta Beams in the SPS and maybe als other machines.
From E. Wildner,
Trying to do the layout of the Beta Beam in the CERN cite.
Mostly for the costing. Will be presented the Costing meeting 25th of May.
To integrate a new machine into the CERN Safety system is really needed experts help.
From O. Hansen,
The G4beam line simulation works fine.
His presentation in the Target phone meeting was postponed.
Placed a detector right after the target to look at the emittance right after.
Surprising result was the if one decrease the field there were more particles going
down the solenoid. This will needs to be understood why.
From E. Benedetto,
Been working on ERIT (the FFAG ring in Osaka, Japan), from analytical simulation (ICOOL, thanks to M. Aiba) and analytical formula
It will be very complicated to see ionization cooling because of the physical aperture of the machine.
So for the time being this idea to use ERIT to prove ionization cooling for the Production Ring is postponed.
Longer term future: could put insertions in the FFAG to squeeze beta at interaction points,
but it is not their first priority and it will probably be very much postponed due to the situation in Japan.
From G. Prior,
Neutrino Factory has released the IDR. There will be a review of this from the SPC,
for the Neutrino Panel of ECFA (European Committe for Future Accelerators) Review 5-6th of May.
Trying to make a shorter ICOOL lattice for the Front End (bunch rotation and cooling),
to give off the particle after the target area (esp. the Be window) instead of the current simulation which hands-off particles at z = 0.
