Detector multiplicity BB versus NF (F. Dufour):
Next meeting: March 1st room 6-2-004 at 10:30 am
The question was originally raised by Elena W. Fanny's presentation (.pdf) addresses the signal selection/background rejection efficiency in the case of a Water Cherenkov detector and the likelihood analysis they did for T2KK [arXiv: 1001.5165[hep-ph]]. As a conclusion, the separation between signal and background is very good at low energies, becomes worse at higher energies and, above 3 GeV, the likelihood analysis to reject the neutral current background is not working any more for Water Cherenkov detectors. High-Q BetaBeam, if compared to low-Q isotopes, in addition to the factor ~1/Q lost from geometrical considerations (longer baseline), will suffer from more background (in particular π+) and will need Liquid Argon detectors, but for LAr as well similar considerations apply (Alain).
Discussion about outcome/impressions from Chamonix Workshop. LHC injector-chain updgade based on the LP (Low-Power)-SPL and PS2 will be revised. HP (High-Power)-SPL activities should go on, targeted to neutrino applications (proton driver for NF, collaboration with U.S. μ collider group...). LP-SPL will be needed also for producing 6He and 18Ne BB. Although the focus is now on the HP-SPL, a wise approach would be anyway to build it in stages.
In March, the SPC will discuss the outcome of the Neutrino Workshop in October 2009. The Chamonix and the Neutrino workshop will be subject of the Council meeting happening in March as well.
Alain and others will meet in the next weeks to discuss the physics point for the neutrino experiment in the PS, which looks very interesting for attracting neutrino physicists at CERN in the near future, for testing near detectors (on/off axis) and new technologies (e.g. Liquid Argon). The experiment can use some existing infrastructure (tunnel and buildings). Radiation protection constraints should be taken into account.
